Health and Safety

We will provide health clinics and hands-on survival training at the 2023 Forum

Health Clinic

We would like to thank the health providers from USM School of Nursing for hosting the Health Clinic each year.   This year they will have a “First Aid Kit Station” with guidance on building first aid kits and give a list of what would be needed for use on boats to address minor lacerations/cuts etc.  They will also be raffling off two pre-made first aid kits.  They will also continue the free blood pressure, cholesterol, glucose and health screenings and provide education on skin care and safety with our partners at Impact Melanoma.  These services will be available on Thursday (10-4), Friday (9-4), and Saturday (9-2).

Skin Cancer Screening

Dr. Siobhan Arey and Dr. Kerry Lavigne from Camden Dermatology have volunteered to provide FREE skin cancer screenings and prevention information.   These services will be available on Friday (10:00 am to 1:00 pm) and Saturday (9:00 am to 11:00 am) in the Monhegan Room.

Hands-on Survival Training

The Coast Guard’s Commercial Fishing Vessel Safety Program will once again provide water safety training on Friday and Saturday mornings from 8:00 a.m. to 10:00 a.m. for adults and kids.

They will provide life raft and immersion suit training training as well as instruction on water survival techniques and free inspections of immersion suits.  Attendees are allowed to either bring their own suit or try one of the Coast Guard’s in the heated pool.  “This training has saved lives.  Three people on one boat went through the training and survived a fire and sinking of their vessel within minutes – when was the last time you practiced?”

First Aid and CPR Training

A CPR/First Aid course (Coast Guard Approved Certification by the American Safety and Health Institute) will be held at the Samoset once again this year, sponsored by the Maine Fishermen’s Forum and Bar Harbor Savings and Loan.  Applications can be found here and the cost is $50 per person.  There are only 10 spaces available and applications will be accepted on a first come first serve basis, and payment can be made by credit card, Paypal or check.  The course will be held on Thursday, March 2nd from 1:00 to 4:30 pm in the Golf Club.
