DMR Lobster Science Session held April 8th, 2021
Maine DMR research staff collected data on the lobster population at different life stages through multiple long-term monitoring programs including the commercial landings, commercial sea sampling, Ventless Trap Survey, Inshore Trawl Survey, and Settlement Survey. In 2020, additional projects continued for maturity determination and a larval lobster survey. DMR staff presented the results of these monitoring programs in 2020 and how 2020 compares in the context of previous years in a virtual webinar.

2021 Virtual Event – Young Fishermen
The Maine Fishermen’s Forum is committed to be a resource for all fishermen and those in the industry. We are particularly interested in supporting Maine’s next fishing generation. In 2021, we conducted the Future of Fishing Video Challenge and Seminar. We launched the event in February with a request for video submissions from young fishermen and aired the videos during our March seminar, highlighting active industry members from Portland to Jonesboro, ages 8 to 31. We heard that the next generation is interested in learning more technical and practical skills (such as tying knots, studying the bottom, advice on trap types, and learning more about rules and regulations), how to ensure the future of the industry (ocean stewardship, how to save working waterfronts), and most importantly, who they can lean on in their communities for advice.
We will use this information to create sessions during the 2022 Fishermen’s Forum to continue this conversation and support generations to come. In the meantime, enjoy the videos!
